San Francisco - Fisherman's Wharf: USS Pampanito ידי wallyg

The USS Pampanito, also known as SS-383/AGSS-383, sitting off Fisherman’s Wharf Pier 45, is a World War II Balao-class fleet submarine, restored to a late 1945 vintage. Named for a variety of the pompano fish, she was commissioned on November 6, 1943, built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and launched on July 12, 1943. The Pamapanito made six war patrols from 1944 to 1945, credited with sinking five Japanese ships. From 1960 to 1971, she was reclassified AGSS-383 and served in Vallejo as a Naval Reserve Training ship. Struck from the Naval register, she was converted to a museum ship in 1975 and transferred to the Maritime Park Association (formerly the National Maritime Museum Association) on May 20, 1976. Pampanito earned six battle stars for its World War II Service. In her first patrol conducted in the southwest approaches to Saipan and Guam from March 15 to May 2, 1944 she scored two torpedo hits on a destroyer. In her second patrol off Kyūshū, Shikoku, and Honshū from June 3 to July 23, she narrowly avoided torpedo fire from a Japanese sub and damaged a Japanese gunboat. In her third patrol, a "wolfpack" operation with submarines Growler (SS-215) and Sealion (SS-315) in the South China Sea from August 17 to September 28, she sank the 10,509-ton POW ship Kachidoki Maru, the 5,135-ton tanker Zuihō Maru, damaged a third ship, and rescued 73 British and Australian POW survivors. In her fourth patrol off off Formosa and the coast of southeastern China with Sea Cat (SS-399), Pipefish (SS-388), and Searaven (SS-196) from October 28 to December 30, she sunk the 1200-ton cargo ship Shinko Maru Number One and damaged a second ship. In her fifth payrol in the Gulf of Siam with Guavina (SS-362), from January 23 to February 12, she sank the 6,968-ton cargo ship Engen and the 3,520-ton passenger-cargo ship Eifuku Maru. In her fifth and final war patrol, in the Gulf of Siam with Caiman (SS-323), Sealion, and Mingo (SS-261), she sighted only one target before sailing for Pearl Harbor. In 1995, she played the fictional USS Stingray (SS-161) in the Kelsey Grammer movie Down Periscope. National Register #86000089 (1986)
